Jordan River Project

Dedication of the Church of Bethany by the Jordan Evangelical Lutheran Church was held at the Baptismal Site on January 6th, 2014.

1-The inauguration occurred on Monday Jan 6th, 2014 at 10am.

2- All attendants for the opening ceremony attended the reception in the Church hall adjacent to the Church at Baptismal Site.

3- Attendees toured the area of Baptismal Site after the reception then a visit to the Dead sea area and lunch at the Panorama Restaurant.

4- On Monday evening dinner was held in Amman at the Hall of the Evangelical Lutheran Good Shepherd for guests, local community members and a number of dignitaries.

In 2010, His Highness, King Abdullah of Jordan created the Royal Baptism Site Commission to promote a Christian Ecumenical Environment among the major Christian denominations in the Jordanian part of the Holy Land. Our own Bishop Younan's ELCHL was given a plot of land at the site of where Jesus was baptized by John.

Of all the sites, the Lutheran site will be the only ecumenical development that will welcome all people to come and worship, meet and learn together. The site will have a simple church in the style of early Christendom, and conference center for inter and intra faith gatherings, along with a small office and apartment for the site staff. The site is within a short walk to the Jordan river where Christ was baptized. The Jordanian Commission site is devoid of commercialism. In fact, the site will only maintain the character and nature of the Holy Land from the time of Christ!

The emphasis of the ELCHL is three fold: spiritual growth in a most holy setting, historical and archeological preservation, and a true environmental preservation, all wrapped around the concepts of inclusion and ecumenical development. This is a site that we modern day Templars can support in our efforts to keep the roads open to the Holy Land, and while we also continue to support our Arab Christian brothers and sisters efforts to remain in the Holy Land. There will be a cornerstone laying ceremony 6 January 2012 and all Templars are invited. Shortly, a fund raising campaign will be launched to cover the costs to build this ecumenical monument to Christian development in the Holy Land.
